Lesson Objectives
🎯 What you will learn:
- What superlative adjectives are and why we use them.
- The rules for forming superlatives (-est, the most).
- How to use “the” with superlatives.
- To compare three or more things correctly.
📘 What Are Superlative Adjectives?
We use superlative adjectives to show that one person, thing, or place is the most of all. We use them when we compare three or more things.
Comparative (Lesson 11): She is taller than me. (Compares 2 people)
Superlative (This Lesson): She is the tallest in the class. (Compares 1 person to the whole group)
🛠️ How to Make Superlatives (Short Adjectives)
1️⃣ 1-syllable adjectives: Add -est
tall → the tallest
fast → the fastest
2️⃣ Adjectives ending in -e: Add -st
large → the largest
nice → the nicest
3️⃣ C-V-C ending: Double last letter + -est
big → the biggest
hot → the hottest
🛠️ How to Make Superlatives (Long Adjectives)
4️⃣ Adjectives ending in -y: Change y to i + -est
happy → the happiest
easy → the easiest
5️⃣ 2+ syllable adjectives: Use “the most”
beautiful → the most beautiful
expensive → the most expensive
❗ Always Use “The” Before Superlatives!
📌 Irregular Superlative Adjectives
Some adjectives are special. They don’t follow the normal rules.
| Adjective | Comparative | Superlative |
|---|---|---|
| good | better | the best |
| bad | worse | the worst |
| far | farther | the farthest |
He is the best player.
This is the worst movie I’ve seen.
