Lesson Objectives
🎯 What you will learn:
- What the Second Conditional is and when to use it for imaginary situations.
- The structure: If + Past Simple, … would + base verb.
- How to talk about unreal or impossible things.
- How to use “if I were you” to give advice.
📘 What is the Second Conditional?
The Second Conditional talks about unreal or imaginary situations in the present or future. It’s like saying: “This is not true, but let’s imagine it.”
✅ Structure
If + Past Simple, … would + base verb
If I won the lottery, (imaginary condition) I would buy a car. (imagined result)
✅ More Examples
Remember to use the past simple in the ‘if’ part and would + base verb in the result part.
If I were rich, I would travel the world.
If she had a car, she would drive to school.
If we lived in Paris, we would speak French.
❌ Don’t Use “Would” After “If”!
If I would see her… → If I saw her…
🧠 Special Note: “Were” for All Subjects
In the Second Conditional, it is very common and correct to use “were” instead of “was” for all subjects (I, he, she, it).
This is especially true for giving advice with “If I were you…”
If I were taller, I would play basketball.
If he were here, we would start.
If I were you, I would say sorry.
❓ Switching the Parts & When to Use
You can start with the “would” part, but remember to remove the comma.
I would buy a car if I won the lottery.
He would go if he had money.
💡 When to Use It
- For dreams: “If I had wings, I would fly.”
- For impossible situations: “If I were the president, I would…”
- For things that are not true now: “If he knew English, he would talk to her.”
