🧭 Introduction

📘 What Are Modal Verbs of Advice?

We use modal verbs of advice to tell someone what is a good idea or what they should do. These are not strong orders, just suggestions.

🟦 “Should” and “Ought to”

1. Should (General Advice)

Use “should” to give a suggestion or your opinion about what is a good idea. Structure: Subject + should + verb

You should eat healthy food.

He should study for the test.

2. Ought to (Formal Advice)

This means the same as “should,” but it is a little more formal. Structure: Subject + ought to + verb

You ought to be careful.

They ought to arrive on time.

🟦 “Had Better” (Strong Advice)

Use this for strong advice, especially when there might be a bad result if the person doesn’t follow the advice.

Subject + had better + verb

You had better call your mother. (or she will be worried)

He had better take an umbrella. (because it might rain)

We had better hurry. (or we will be late)

🚨 Be careful! “Had better” is stronger than “should”.

To give negative advice, we add “not”.
