- Where to place time expressions in a sentence.
- To use time expressions correctly with the simple past tense.
🟦 What Are Time Expressions in the Past?
🧒 Time expressions tell us when something happened. In past tense sentences, they help us understand the time of the action.
Think like this:
🔹 “I went to school.” (Okay, but when?)
🔹 “I went to school yesterday.” (Now it’s clear!)
These expressions are very helpful when using the Simple Past.
🧠 Common Past Time Expressions
Here are the most common past time expressions you need to learn:
| Time Expression | Example Sentence |
|---|---|
| yesterday | I watched TV yesterday. |
| last night | She cooked dinner last night. |
| last week | We visited a museum last week. |
| an hour ago | He called me an hour ago. |
| two days ago | I saw her two days ago. |
| in 2020 | We moved here in 2020. |
| on Monday | She arrived on Monday. |
✨ Structure Reminder
Use time expressions with the Simple Past. They usually go at the end of the sentence.
Subject + past verb + … + time expression
🔹 I played football yesterday.
🔹 She went to school last Monday.
🔹 They arrived two hours ago.
🧠 You can also put the time at the beginning for emphasis:
Yesterday, I played football.
❌ Be Careful!
Time expressions must match the past tense. Always use the past form of the verb when using past time expressions.
❌ I go to school yesterday.
✅ I went to school yesterday.
🗣️ Example Sentences
Read these sentences to practice.
I watched a movie last night.
He came home an hour ago.
