About this test

About the CH Sound Pronunciation Test (A2 Elementary)

The CH sound in chair and watch starts like a T, with the tongue touching behind the top teeth, and releases into an SH. It is a short, sharp sound. Speakers of French, Portuguese and some Spanish dialects often replace it with SH, so chair sounds like share and cheap like sheep.

Why practise this at A2 level

At A2 you already know the everyday words, so this is the right moment to fix habits before they become permanent. The sentences talk about shopping, travel and free time and are a little longer, which helps you keep the sound clear inside a phrase.

How to get it right

  • Start with the tongue touching the ridge behind the top teeth, as for T
  • Release it quickly into an SH sound
  • Push the lips slightly forward
  • Practise pairs such as chair and share, watch and wash

FAQ

CH Sound Pronunciation Test (A2 Elementary): FAQ

What is the difference between CH and SH?
CH starts with a short stop, like a T, and then releases. SH is a continuous sound with no stop. You can hold an SH for several seconds, but not a CH.
Is the CH sound test A2 right for my level?
It is ideal for elementary learners. If A2 feels easy and you score above ninety, move to the B1 version; if it feels hard, try the A1 version first.
Which spellings make the CH sound?
Ch as in chair, tch as in watch and t before ure as in picture and nature. The test includes several of these spellings.
Is the CH sound test A2 free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up and no download. You only need a microphone and a browser such as Chrome, Edge or Safari.
How is my pronunciation scored?
The browser listens to each sentence and compares what it heard with the text, word by word. Clear words turn green, almost-right words amber and unclear words red, and you get a score out of 100.
Can I choose British or American English?
Yes. Choose British or American English before you start. The model voice, the spelling and the speech recognition all follow the accent you pick.
