About this test

About the Plural Endings Pronunciation Test (B1 Intermediate)

The S at the end of plural nouns, third person verbs and possessives has three sounds. After voiceless sounds it is S, as in cats and books. After voiced sounds it is Z, as in dogs and days. After hissing sounds such as S, SH or CH it is IZ, an extra syllable, as in boxes and watches. Dropping or mixing these endings is one of the most common learner errors.

Why practise this at B1 level

At B1 you speak in full sentences, and sounds start to change when words join together. These intermediate sentences make you keep the sound clear at a natural speed, which is exactly what people notice in a real conversation.

How to get it right

  • Say S after voiceless sounds, as in cats and books
  • Say Z after voiced sounds and vowels, as in dogs and plays
  • Add the syllable IZ after hissing sounds, as in buses and wishes
  • Do not drop the ending in fast speech

FAQ

Plural Endings Pronunciation Test (B1 Intermediate): FAQ

How do I know if a plural sounds S, Z or IZ?
Look at the last sound of the word, not the letter. Voiceless sounds take S, voiced sounds take Z, and S, Z, SH, CH, J sounds take IZ.
Is the plural endings pronunciation test B1 right for my level?
It suits intermediate learners. Score above ninety and move up to B2; if many words turn red, practise the A2 version first.
Do the same rules apply to verbs?
Yes. The third person ending, as in works, plays and watches, follows exactly the same three sounds as plurals.
Is the plural endings pronunciation test B1 free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up and no download. You only need a microphone and a browser such as Chrome, Edge or Safari.
How is my pronunciation scored?
The browser listens to each sentence and compares what it heard with the text, word by word. Clear words turn green, almost-right words amber and unclear words red, and you get a score out of 100.
Can I choose British or American English?
Yes. Choose British or American English before you start. The model voice, the spelling and the speech recognition all follow the accent you pick.
