About this test

About the F Sound Pronunciation Test (C2 Proficiency)

The F sound is made with the top teeth resting lightly on the bottom lip while air flows through, with no voice. It is the voiceless partner of V. Speakers of Korean, Tagalog and some Arabic dialects often replace it with P, so fan sounds like pan, while others confuse it with H. English spells it in several ways, including ph and gh.

Why practise this at C2 level

At C2 the aim is effortless, near-native clarity. These proficiency sentences pack difficult sounds into fast, dense phrases, many of them close to tongue twisters, so even confident speakers find out what still needs work.

How to get it right

  • Rest your top teeth on your bottom lip
  • Blow air through gently without using your voice
  • Keep the lips apart, never closing them as for P
  • Practise pairs such as fan and pan, fine and vine

FAQ

F Sound Pronunciation Test (C2 Proficiency): FAQ

Which spellings make the F sound?
F as in fish, ff as in coffee, ph as in phone and photo, and gh as in laugh, enough and tough.
Is the F sound test C2 right for my level?
It is the hardest version, for proficient and near-native speakers. If you find it too difficult, practise the C1 version first.
What is the difference between F and V?
Both use the teeth on the lip. F has no voice and V does. Put your hand on your throat: you should feel a buzz for V but not for F.
Is the F sound test C2 free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up and no download. You only need a microphone and a browser such as Chrome, Edge or Safari.
How is my pronunciation scored?
The browser listens to each sentence and compares what it heard with the text, word by word. Clear words turn green, almost-right words amber and unclear words red, and you get a score out of 100.
Can I choose British or American English?
Yes. Choose British or American English before you start. The model voice, the spelling and the speech recognition all follow the accent you pick.
