About this test

About the Long I Sound Pronunciation Test (C2 Proficiency)

The long I is a diphthong: it starts with an open A sound, as in father, and glides up to a short I. It appears in many essential words, including I, my, time, like and night. Learners sometimes shorten it or flatten it, so time sounds like Tom or like sounds like lake.

Why practise this at C2 level

At C2 the aim is effortless, near-native clarity. These proficiency sentences pack difficult sounds into fast, dense phrases, many of them close to tongue twisters, so even confident speakers find out what still needs work.

How to get it right

  • Start with the mouth wide open, as for ah
  • Glide smoothly up towards a short I
  • Make the first part strong and the end light
  • Practise words such as time, nice and fly
