Periodo Ipotetico in Inglese: Sai Davvero Quale Usare?

TipoSignificatoEsempio
ZeroVerità generali, fattiIf you heat water, it boils.
PrimoPossibilità futura realeIf it rains, I will stay home.
SecondoPresente/futuro irrealeIf I won the lottery, I would travel.
TerzoPassato irrealeIf I had studied, I would have passed.

Zero Conditional: Fatti e Verita Generali

If + present simple, present simple. Usato per cose sempre vere. “If” e “when” sono intercambiabili qui.

First Conditional: Possibilita Futura Reale

If + present simple, will + verbo base. Usato per situazioni future realistiche.

  • If it rains tomorrow, we will cancel the picnic.

Second Conditional: Presente o Futuro Irreale

If + past simple, would + verbo base. Usato per situazioni ipotetiche.

  • If I won the lottery, I would buy a house.
  • If I were you, I would apologize.

Third Conditional: Passato Irreale

If + past perfect, would have + participio passato.

  • If I had studied harder, I would have passed.

Zero (verità generali), Primo (possibilità futura reale), Secondo (presente/futuro irreale), Terzo (passato irreale).

Posso usare “will” nella frase con “if”?

No, mai in un primo conditional standard. “Will” va solo nella frase risultato.

Si dice “if I was you” o “if I were you”?

“If I were you” è la forma formale tradizionale, anche se “was” è comune nel parlato casual.

Posso usare “when” invece di “if” nello zero conditional?

Sì, “If it rains, I will stay home” e “I will stay home if it rains” hanno lo stesso significato.
