Quick answers
TOEFL Essay Practice: Frequently Asked Questions
Is there still an essay on the TOEFL?
Not a long essay. Since 21 January 2026 the TOEFL iBT Writing section has three tasks: Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion. The Academic Discussion task is the closest to an essay. It is a short, focused response of at least 100 words written in about 10 minutes.
Book a Free LessonWhat essays were on the older TOEFL?
The older TOEFL iBT had an Independent Writing essay, where you gave and supported your opinion, and an Integrated Writing essay, where you read, listened and then wrote. The independent essay was replaced by the Academic Discussion task in 2023, and the integrated essay was removed in January 2026.
Book a Free LessonWhy should I practise essays if the test has changed?
Essay practice builds skills that you still need: organising ideas, supporting an opinion, linking sentences and writing accurately. These skills help you write short TOEFL responses, university assignments and other exams.
Book a Free LessonHow do I practise essay writing for the current TOEFL?
Practise short timed responses, such as a 10-minute discussion post or a brief email, and then build up to longer pieces. Use a timer, write from a plan and review your grammar and word choice after each answer.
Book a Free LessonWhat is a good essay structure?
A simple structure is an introduction with your position, two body paragraphs that each have a reason and an example, and a short conclusion. For a short discussion post you can compress the same ideas into one clear paragraph.
Book a Free LessonHow do I write a strong opinion?
State your position clearly in the first sentence, give two reasons and support each with a short example from real life. If it fits, mention another point of view briefly and explain why you still hold your opinion.
Book a Free LessonHow can I write faster and still stay accurate?
Spend a minute planning your position, reasons and example, then write without stopping. Regular timed practice, simple sentences and a steady routine help you build speed. Leave a moment at the end to proofread.
Book a Free LessonWhat are linking words and why do they matter?
Linking words such as first, in addition, for example, however and as a result show how your ideas connect. They make your writing easier to follow and help the reader see your argument clearly.
Book a Free LessonWhat are common essay mistakes to avoid?
Common mistakes include going off topic, repeating the same idea, writing a very long introduction, using complicated words incorrectly and not proofreading. A clear plan and simple, accurate language help you avoid them.
Book a Free LessonShould I use templates for essay practice?
A basic structure and a few linking phrases are useful. Do not memorise a complete essay. Your writing should answer the actual question with your own ideas in natural language.
Book a Free LessonHow can I improve my vocabulary for essay writing?
Keep word lists for common themes such as education, technology and health. Learn useful phrases for opinions, reasons and examples, and practise using new words in your own sentences rather than just memorising them.
Book a Free LessonHow many words should I write?
For the Academic Discussion task the instructions ask for at least 100 words. For general essay practice there is no fixed length. Focus on a clear, complete answer with good support for your ideas.
Book a Free LessonHow is TOEFL writing scored?
ETS reports each section on a 1 to 6 scale, and during a two-year transition period it also gives a comparable overall score on the older 0 to 120 scale. In general, writing is judged on how clearly and accurately you communicate and how well you answer the task.
Book a Free LessonCan a tutor help me improve my essays?
Yes. In a live lesson, a tutor can help you review your writing, explain mistakes and show you how to organise your ideas more clearly. You can book a free lesson to try it.
