TOEFL Mock Test: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a TOEFL mock test?

A TOEFL mock test is a practice test that imitates the real exam. It lets you experience the format, the timing and the pressure before test day, and it shows you which skills need more work.

Is a mock test the same as the real TOEFL?

No. Unofficial mock tests only approximate the real test, and their scores are estimates. Official practice materials from ETS are the closest to the real exam, so use them whenever you can and check the ETS website for what is available.

What does a full TOEFL test include now?

Since 21 January 2026 the TOEFL iBT has four sections in this order: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. According to ETS they have about 50, 47, 12 and 11 items, with base times of about 30, 29, 23 and 8 minutes. Reading and Listening are adaptive.

How long does the TOEFL take?

ETS suggests allowing about two hours for the test, not including directions. Because Reading and Listening adapt to your performance, the exact number of items and the time can vary. Check the ETS website for the latest details.

How is the TOEFL scored?

ETS reports each of the four sections on a 1 to 6 scale, and the overall score is the average of the section scores, rounded to the nearest half band. During a two-year transition period, ETS also gives a comparable overall score on the older 0 to 120 scale.

Where can I find an official TOEFL practice test?

Look on the official ETS website, which offers official practice materials for the TOEFL iBT. Third-party mock tests can be useful for extra practice, but their quality and scoring differ, so treat their results as rough guides.

How should I take a mock test?

Choose a quiet room, switch off your phone, use headphones and follow the real timing without pausing. Try to take it at the same time of day as your real test, and use only the materials that ETS allows on test day.

How often should I take mock tests?

Early in your preparation, practise one section at a time and build your skills. In the last few weeks, take a full test every one or two weeks, and leave plenty of time to review each one. Reviewing is more important than taking many tests.

How do I review a mock test?

Make an error log. For each mistake, note the question type, why you got it wrong and what you will do to fix it. Listen again to your speaking recordings and re-read your writing, and look for patterns that repeat.

How can I check my Speaking and Writing in a mock test?

Record your speaking answers and save your writing. Check them against clear criteria such as relevance, organisation, accuracy and clarity. A tutor can give you honest feedback and show you what to improve, which is hard to get from a score alone.

Should I take a full test or one section at a time?

Do both. Single sections help you build skills and fix problems. Full tests build stamina and help you manage your energy and concentration for the whole exam. Start with sections and add full tests as your test date gets closer.

What if my mock test score is low?

This is normal and useful. A mock test is a diagnosis, not a judgement. Find your weakest section, study it step by step and test again. Many learners improve a lot when they focus on one weakness at a time.

Does a mock test score predict my real score?

Only roughly. Unofficial tests and different scoring methods can give different results, and your performance varies from day to day. Use the score to track your progress over time rather than as a promise of your real result.

How can I reduce stress on test day?

Practise under test conditions so nothing feels new, keep a calm routine, sleep well and know the format. Simple breathing and a positive mindset help, and so does arriving or logging in early.
