What is the Complete the Words task?

In Complete the Words you finish words in a short text where some letters are missing. It tests your spelling, your knowledge of word forms and how well you use the context of the sentence to choose the right word.

What is the Read in Daily Life task?

You read short everyday texts, such as notices, emails, menus, signs or social media posts, and answer questions about what they say. These tasks test whether you can find and understand practical information quickly.

What is the Read an Academic Passage task?

You read an academic passage on a subject such as science, history or society and answer questions about the main idea, details, vocabulary and what the writer suggests. Good vocabulary and careful reading are the keys to this task.

Is the TOEFL Reading section adaptive?

Yes. The Reading and Listening sections use a multistage adaptive design, which means the difficulty of the second part depends on how you perform in the first part. Doing your best from the very first question is a good strategy.

How were TOEFL Reading questions different before 2026?

The older format used longer academic passages with several question types, such as factual information, inference, vocabulary in context, rhetorical purpose, sentence simplification, inserting a sentence and summarising the passage. Many of those skills are still useful today.

How can I improve my reading speed?

Read a little every day, starting with short texts at your level, and slowly move to harder ones. Practise skimming for the main idea, avoid translating every word and use a timer so you get used to reading under time pressure.

How do I answer vocabulary questions?

Look at the words and sentences around the new word for clues. Think about the part of speech and any familiar word parts, then choose the meaning that fits the sentence best. Check your choice by reading the sentence again with it.

How do I answer inference questions?

Find the evidence in the text first. Choose the answer that the text strongly suggests, not one that needs outside knowledge or a big guess. Wrong choices often go too far or add ideas that are not in the passage.

Should I read the passage first or the questions first?

A good habit is to skim the text quickly for the main idea, then read each question carefully and go back to the text for the details. Try different methods in practice and keep the one that gives you the best results.

How do I manage my time in the Reading section?

Practise with a timer so you know how long you can spend on each question. If a question is hard, make your best choice and move on. There is no penalty for a wrong answer in the TOEFL, so it is best to answer every question.

How can I practise TOEFL Reading at home?

Read short articles and everyday texts, then write your own questions about them. Keep a vocabulary notebook, review the mistakes you make and practise a little every day instead of studying for hours once a week.
