TOEFL Speaking Task 3: Frequently Asked Questions

What is TOEFL Speaking Task 3?

TOEFL Speaking Task 3 was the academic concept task in the classic TOEFL iBT format. You read a short passage about an academic concept, listened to part of a lecture where a professor gave examples, and then explained how those examples illustrate the concept. You had 30 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak.

Is TOEFL Speaking Task 3 still on the test?

Not in the same form. Since 21 January 2026 the TOEFL iBT Speaking section has two task types, Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview. Task 3 practice still builds listening, note-taking and explaining skills that help your spoken English. Always check the official ETS website for the current format.

What do I read and hear in Task 3?

You read a short passage that explains an academic concept or term, in a subject such as psychology, biology or business. Then a professor talks about the same concept and gives one or two examples or a short story that shows how it works.

What do I have to say in Task 3?

You explain the concept in your own words and then show how the examples from the lecture match it. Your own opinion is not needed. A good answer links each example clearly to the idea from the reading.

How do I answer TOEFL Speaking Task 3?

Start with one or two sentences that name and explain the concept. Then describe the first example with its key details and say how it shows the concept. If there is a second example, do the same. Keep each part short and clear.

How much time should I spend on the reading and the lecture?

Keep the reading part short, only one or two sentences. Spend most of your answer on the examples from the lecture, because that is where the details and the link to the concept are.

How should I take notes for Task 3?

While you read, write the term and a short definition. While you listen, note each example, its key details and how it connects to the term. Use short words and symbols, not full sentences.

How can I paraphrase instead of copying the reading?

Use your own words and simple phrases such as this means, for example or this shows that. Change the sentence structure and use synonyms, but keep the meaning exactly the same.

How is TOEFL Speaking Task 3 scored?

In the classic format, speaking responses were rated on delivery, language use and topic development. For this task, topic development also means you explain the concept and the lecture examples accurately and link them clearly.

What if I do not understand the academic concept?

You do not need any special knowledge. The reading and the lecture give you everything you need. Focus on the explanation in the passage and on how the professor uses it in the examples.

How can I improve my listening to academic lectures?

Listen to short talks on science, business and society, replay them and write the key points. Then say the main idea and examples out loud in your own words. Learning common academic vocabulary also makes lectures easier to follow.

How can I practise TOEFL Speaking Task 3 at home?

Find a short definition of an academic concept and a short talk about it, take notes, then set a timer for 30 seconds of preparation and 60 seconds of speaking. Record your answer, check it against your notes and repeat with a new topic each day.

What are common mistakes in Task 3?

Common mistakes are copying the reading word for word, spending too long on the reading, forgetting to link the example to the concept, adding your own opinion and running out of time. A simple structure helps you avoid all of them.
