TOEFL Speaking Topics with Answers: Frequently Asked Questions
What are TOEFL speaking topics?
TOEFL speaking topics are the everyday, campus and general themes you may be asked to speak about. Topics are not announced in advance, so the best preparation is to practise answering questions on many different themes with a clear structure.

Since 21 January 2026 the Speaking section has two task types, Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview. Topics are generally everyday and campus-related, but they are not announced in advance. Check the official ETS website for the latest information.
Book a Free LessonWhich topics should I practise?
Practise common themes such as education, technology, work, travel, health, the environment, family and friends, hobbies, food and city life. These themes give you useful vocabulary and ideas for many different questions.

Question: Do you think students learn better online or in a classroom? Example answer: I think students learn better in a classroom. The main reason is that teachers can see when someone is confused and help right away. For example, in my English class last year, my teacher explained a grammar point twice because she saw my face. Online, that kind of help is harder.

Question: Should students use phones in class? Example answer: I think phones can be useful, but only for learning. One reason is that students can look up a word quickly. For example, in my science class we used a phone app to check a term. However, phones can distract students, so teachers should set clear rules.

Question: Would you rather work from home or in an office? Example answer: I would rather work in an office. First, it is easier to talk with colleagues and ask questions. For example, when I started my last job, my coworkers helped me learn the system in a few days. Second, I can separate work from home life, which helps me relax.
Book a Free LessonWhat is an example answer about health?
Question: How do you stay healthy during busy weeks? Example answer: I stay healthy by keeping a simple routine. I try to sleep at least seven hours and walk for twenty minutes every day. For example, during exam week I walked to the library instead of taking the bus, and I felt less tired. Small habits help me a lot.
Book a Free LessonWhat is an example answer about the environment?
Question: Should cities have fewer cars? Example answer: Yes, I think cities should have fewer cars. One reason is cleaner air, which is better for everyone. For example, the center of my city is crowded and the air feels heavy. Another reason is safety, because with fewer cars, people can walk and cycle more easily.
Book a Free LessonWhat is an example answer about travel?
Question: Do you prefer to travel alone or with friends? Example answer: I prefer to travel with friends. It is more fun to share new experiences. For example, last summer my friends and I visited a small town and laughed about everything that went wrong with the bus. Also, travelling together is safer and sometimes cheaper because we share the costs.
Book a Free LessonHow do I build an answer for any topic?
Use a simple frame: answer the question directly, give one reason and add a short example from real or imagined life. Keep your sentences clear and your pace steady. The same frame works for almost every topic.
Book a Free LessonHow can I find ideas quickly?
Ask yourself who, what and why. Think about advantages and disadvantages, and about a time when you experienced the topic yourself. One personal example is usually enough to develop a short answer.
Book a Free LessonShould I memorise the example answers?
No. Use them as models to see the structure, not as scripts. In the test your question will be different, and a memorised answer will sound unnatural. Practise with your own ideas and examples instead.
Book a Free LessonHow can I practise speaking topics every day?
Choose one topic a day, give yourself a short time to think and answer out loud. Record yourself, listen back and note one thing to improve. Repeat the same topic the next day to see your progress.
Book a Free LessonHow can I build vocabulary for different topics?
Keep a small word list for each theme with useful words and common word combinations. Use the new words in your own spoken answers, because words you speak aloud are easier to remember than words you only read.
Book a Free LessonCan I practise speaking topics with a tutor at The Royal Visions Academy?
Yes. You can book a free live lesson with a tutor to practise answering questions on different topics and get feedback, and you can take our English courses at your own pace. Our courses build general English skills and are not official TOEFL materials.
