About this test

About the American Accent Pronunciation Test (A2 Elementary)

General American English has a few features that make it distinctive: the R is always pronounced, as in car and water; a T between vowels becomes a soft tap, as in city and better; and the short O in hot sounds more open, close to the A in father. This test is set to American English, so the model voice, the spelling and the scoring all follow a US accent.

Why practise this at A2 level

At A2 you already know the everyday words, so this is the right moment to fix habits before they become permanent. The sentences talk about shopping, travel and free time and are a little longer, which helps you keep the sound clear inside a phrase.

How to get it right

  • Pronounce every R, including after vowels in car and here
  • Soften the T between vowels, as in water and getting
  • Open the short O in words like hot and stop
  • Copy the rhythm of the model voice, stressing key words

FAQ

American Accent Pronunciation Test (A2 Elementary): FAQ

What makes an American accent different from a British one?
The biggest differences are the pronounced R after vowels, the soft flapped T between vowels and several vowels, such as the O in hot and the A in dance.
Is the American accent test A2 right for my level?
It is ideal for elementary learners. If A2 feels easy and you score above ninety, move to the B1 version; if it feels hard, try the A1 version first.
Can I switch to British English?
Yes. You can change the accent before starting, but for this test we recommend American English so you practise one accent consistently.
Is the American accent test A2 free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up and no download. You only need a microphone and a browser such as Chrome, Edge or Safari.
How is my pronunciation scored?
The browser listens to each sentence and compares what it heard with the text, word by word. Clear words turn green, almost-right words amber and unclear words red, and you get a score out of 100.
Can I choose British or American English?
Yes. Choose British or American English before you start. The model voice, the spelling and the speech recognition all follow the accent you pick.
