About this test

About the SH Sound Pronunciation Test (A2 Elementary)

The SH sound is made with the lips pushed forward and rounded and the tongue raised behind the top teeth, leaving a wide channel for the air. It is longer and softer than CH. Speakers of Spanish, Greek and Korean often say S instead, so she sounds like see and shoe like sue. It appears in many common spellings, including tion and sure.

Why practise this at A2 level

At A2 you already know the everyday words, so this is the right moment to fix habits before they become permanent. The sentences talk about shopping, travel and free time and are a little longer, which helps you keep the sound clear inside a phrase.

How to get it right

  • Push your lips forward and round them slightly
  • Raise the tongue but do not touch the top of the mouth
  • Let the air flow out continuously
  • Practise pairs such as sea and she, sip and ship

FAQ

SH Sound Pronunciation Test (A2 Elementary): FAQ

Which spellings make the SH sound?
Sh as in shop, ti as in nation, ci as in special, ss as in mission and s as in sure and sugar. Learning the spellings helps you read new words correctly.
Is the SH sound test A2 right for my level?
It is ideal for elementary learners. If A2 feels easy and you score above ninety, move to the B1 version; if it feels hard, try the A1 version first.
How do I know if I am saying S or SH?
Look in a mirror. For SH your lips push forward and round; for S they stay flat and spread. In the test, if see appears under she, your lips need more rounding.
Is the SH sound test A2 free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up and no download. You only need a microphone and a browser such as Chrome, Edge or Safari.
How is my pronunciation scored?
The browser listens to each sentence and compares what it heard with the text, word by word. Clear words turn green, almost-right words amber and unclear words red, and you get a score out of 100.
Can I choose British or American English?
Yes. Choose British or American English before you start. The model voice, the spelling and the speech recognition all follow the accent you pick.
