About this test

About the S and Z Sounds Pronunciation Test (B1 Intermediate)

S and Z are made in the same place, with the tongue close to the ridge behind the top teeth. S is voiceless, a hiss; Z is voiced, a buzz. Spanish, Italian, Finnish and many other speakers say S everywhere, but English uses the Z sound in hundreds of common words, such as is, was, has, because and plural endings like dogs.

Why practise this at B1 level

At B1 you speak in full sentences, and sounds start to change when words join together. These intermediate sentences make you keep the sound clear at a natural speed, which is exactly what people notice in a real conversation.

How to get it right

  • Keep the tongue close to the ridge behind your top teeth
  • Hiss for S and buzz for Z, with your voice on
  • Make the vowel before a final Z a little longer
  • Practise pairs such as bus and buzz, price and prize

FAQ

S and Z Sounds Pronunciation Test (B1 Intermediate): FAQ

Why does is sound like iz?
The letter S often sounds like Z, especially between vowels and at the end of words after voiced sounds. Is, was, has, his, these and those all end in a Z sound.
Is the S and Z sounds test B1 right for my level?
It suits intermediate learners. Score above ninety and move up to B2; if many words turn red, practise the A2 version first.
Why do I say eschool instead of school?
Spanish and Portuguese do not allow words to start with S plus a consonant, so speakers add an E. Start with a long hissing S and go straight into the K: sssschool.
Is the S and Z sounds test B1 free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up and no download. You only need a microphone and a browser such as Chrome, Edge or Safari.
How is my pronunciation scored?
The browser listens to each sentence and compares what it heard with the text, word by word. Clear words turn green, almost-right words amber and unclear words red, and you get a score out of 100.
Can I choose British or American English?
Yes. Choose British or American English before you start. The model voice, the spelling and the speech recognition all follow the accent you pick.
