About this test

About the IELTS Pronunciation Practice Test (C1 Advanced)

In the IELTS Speaking test, pronunciation is one quarter of your score. Examiners look at how easy you are to understand, how well you use word and sentence stress, intonation and connected speech, and whether individual sounds are clear. This practice test uses B2 and C1 sentences on the kinds of topics that appear in IELTS, so you can check your clarity on real exam-style language.

Why practise this at C1 level

At C1 small errors stand out more, because everything else sounds fluent. These advanced sentences use academic and professional vocabulary, long words and complex stress, so you can polish the last sounds that still give away your first language.

How to get it right

  • Speak at a natural pace rather than slowly and carefully
  • Stress the key words in each sentence
  • Link words smoothly instead of pausing after each one
  • Focus on the red words, then take the test again

FAQ

IELTS Pronunciation Practice Test (C1 Advanced): FAQ

Is this an official IELTS pronunciation test?
No. It is a free practice tool that shows how clearly you are understood. Only a certified IELTS examiner can give you an official band score, but clear words here usually mean clear words in the exam.
Is the IELTS pronunciation test C1 right for my level?
It is built for advanced learners. If you score above ninety, the C2 version is your final challenge.
What pronunciation do I need for IELTS band seven?
For band seven, examiners expect you to be easy to understand throughout, with good control of stress and intonation, even if your accent is noticeable. A strong result in this test is a good sign.
Is the IELTS pronunciation test C1 free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up and no download. You only need a microphone and a browser such as Chrome, Edge or Safari.
How is my pronunciation scored?
The browser listens to each sentence and compares what it heard with the text, word by word. Clear words turn green, almost-right words amber and unclear words red, and you get a score out of 100.
Can I choose British or American English?
Yes. Choose British or American English before you start. The model voice, the spelling and the speech recognition all follow the accent you pick.
