About this test

About the L Sound Pronunciation Test (C1 Advanced)

English has two kinds of L. The light L at the start of words, as in light and love, has the tongue tip on the ridge behind the top teeth. The dark L at the end of words, as in feel and people, is deeper, with the back of the tongue raised. Speakers of Japanese, Korean and Chinese often mix L and R, which changes words like light and right.

Why practise this at C1 level

At C1 small errors stand out more, because everything else sounds fluent. These advanced sentences use academic and professional vocabulary, long words and complex stress, so you can polish the last sounds that still give away your first language.

How to get it right

  • Touch the ridge just behind your top teeth with the tip of your tongue
  • Let the air flow out at the sides of the tongue
  • For the dark L at the end of words, lift the back of the tongue too
  • Keep the tongue touching until the sound is finished

FAQ

L Sound Pronunciation Test (C1 Advanced): FAQ

What is a dark L?
A dark L is the L at the end of a word or before a consonant, as in feel, ball and milk. It sounds deeper because the back of the tongue rises towards the soft palate while the tip still touches the ridge behind the teeth.
Is the L sound test C1 right for my level?
It is built for advanced learners. If you score above ninety, the C2 version is your final challenge.
How do I hear the difference between L and R?
For L the tongue touches the top of the mouth; for R it touches nothing. Say lead and read slowly with your hand under your chin and feel the different movement. The test marks any word where your L was heard as R.
Is the L sound test C1 free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up and no download. You only need a microphone and a browser such as Chrome, Edge or Safari.
How is my pronunciation scored?
The browser listens to each sentence and compares what it heard with the text, word by word. Clear words turn green, almost-right words amber and unclear words red, and you get a score out of 100.
Can I choose British or American English?
Yes. Choose British or American English before you start. The model voice, the spelling and the speech recognition all follow the accent you pick.
