About this test

About the Long E Sound Pronunciation Test (B1 Intermediate)

The long E in see and green is a long, tense vowel with the lips spread as if smiling and the tongue high at the front of the mouth. It contrasts with the short I in sit, and many English words change meaning between the two, such as feel and fill or seat and sit. Holding the long E for its full length is the key.

Why practise this at B1 level

At B1 you speak in full sentences, and sounds start to change when words join together. These intermediate sentences make you keep the sound clear at a natural speed, which is exactly what people notice in a real conversation.

How to get it right

  • Spread your lips as if smiling
  • Raise the front of your tongue high
  • Hold the sound longer than the short I
  • Practise pairs such as seat and sit, feel and fill

FAQ

Long E Sound Pronunciation Test (B1 Intermediate): FAQ

How many spellings does the long E have?
Many: ee in see, ea in eat, e in me, ie in believe, ey in key and eo in people. The test mixes them so you learn to recognise the sound, not just the spelling.
Is the long E sound test B1 right for my level?
It suits intermediate learners. Score above ninety and move up to B2; if many words turn red, practise the A2 version first.
How do I know if my long E is long enough?
If words like leave and feel turn green, your vowel is long enough. If the computer heard live or fill, hold the sound a little longer and smile more.
Is the long E sound test B1 free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up and no download. You only need a microphone and a browser such as Chrome, Edge or Safari.
How is my pronunciation scored?
The browser listens to each sentence and compares what it heard with the text, word by word. Clear words turn green, almost-right words amber and unclear words red, and you get a score out of 100.
Can I choose British or American English?
Yes. Choose British or American English before you start. The model voice, the spelling and the speech recognition all follow the accent you pick.
